| The red fox belongs to the canine family. It is found in most areas of the United States and Canada, as well as in some parts of Europe and Asia. It has a luxurious orange-red coat, a white chest and belly and a white-tipped long bushy tail. The muzzle and ears are pointed and long and its body is slightly built and agile. Foxes live in wooded areas, on the prairies or on farmland where food is plentiful. Their diet consists of a variety of fruit and berries, grasses, eggs and small mammals. The female fox is called a vixen. Two months after mating she gives birth to a litter of one to ten kits. She nurses them in her den while the male hunts for food and brings it to her. When they are one month old, the kits emerge from their den to play and their mother feeds them regurgitated food. Both parents teach the kits hunting and survival skills until they are seven months old and are able to fend for themselves. 7" long. | |||||||||||
