Following in the footsteps of famous Western photographer Benjamin Gifford and standing in precisely the same locations, Oregon's own Steve Terrill has rephotographed more than 100 of Gifford's images taken in the late 19th century. The result is a stunning portrayal of growth and development or lack thereof in Oregon. The photographs can be both reassuring and unnerving, illuminating Oregon's past and challenging the reader to think about its future.

Thomas Robinson is a photograph archivist, conservator and historian who does darkroom printing, research and conservation work for fine art photographers, museums and archives. He is the author of Oregon Photographers 1852-1917: A Biographical History and Directory and other publications about the history of photography. For the last quarter-century he has made his home in Portland, Oregon.

Steve Terrill's work has been published in numerous books, calendars and magazines, including Travel and Leisure, Outdoor Photographer, National Geographic and National Wildlife. His images also appear regularly in Nature Conservancy, Audubon and Sierra Club publications. Steve has six books to his credit, including three Littlebooks by Westcliffe Publishers: Oregon Coast, Oregon Reflections and Wildflowers of Oregon.
